Our Story

It started with a building

A charming brick building in the heart of Sugar House

Constructed in 1947, our flagship Sugar House office first operated as the Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph Garage, housing installation crews and their vehicles as they worked to meet the growing demand for telephone service in the post–World War II era. In 1956, it became home to Stark Steering and Automotive, whose historic neon sign still glows above our front patio. In the 1990s, the space was thoughtfully transformed from an auto shop into a distinctive office designed to showcase an extensive African art collection—blending the functionality of a workplace with the character of a private gallery.

Bright, character-filled, and layered with history, the building immediately captured the attention of two of our founders during a listing appointment. They saw more than exposed brick and open space—they saw possibility. It felt like the perfect home for a brokerage model they had long envisioned.

The five founders of Align had spent decades in the real estate industry, often working alongside one another at larger firms. While grateful for the experience, they shared a common belief: traditional brokerage models had become impersonal, often prioritizing volume over relationships. They imagined something different — a boutique firm centered on collaboration over competition, where agents worked as a team, and clients were treated like long-term partners, not transactions.

The vision had been forming for years, but that building brought it to life. Within six months of that first showing, the Align sign was installed above the door, and the brokerage was born

Five years later, we are proud to have built the brokerage we set out to create — one grounded in experience, integrity, and shared ambition. In 2022, we expanded with a second office, welcoming a new group of professionals who share our commitment to a more thoughtful and collaborative approach to real estate.

Today, the space continues to serve as more than an office. Honoring its artistic legacy, we regularly open our doors to local artists and participate in the Sugar House Art Walk, celebrating the vibrant art and culture of our neighborhood and city. What was once a garage — and later a gallery — remains a place where creativity, collaboration, and community converge.

In many ways, Align reflects the building that started it all — rich with history, shaped by diverse backgrounds, and designed to bring people together. A place where ideas are exchanged, community is strengthened, and a new standard for real estate continues to take shape.
